Internet Forums

I set up a web-based forum with a hierarchy of bulletin boards – the Revolutionary Platform Network Forum – in May 2006. I particularly encourage well-intentioned readers of this website to visit the Good Intentions Network Bulletin Board on that forum if you wish to debate strategies for achieving a more ethical world (and I strongly recommend you to read the Good Intentions Manifesto for some of my views on this). I also particularly encourage you to visit the Economics Bulletin Board (and sub-boards) for analysis of the current economic crisis, and the Environment Bulletin Board for discussion of whether global warming is really primarily caused by mankind (something I am very sceptical about). There are also bulletin boards for News and Forthcoming Events.

In my opinion, the best place for discussion forums on the internet (and probably the place that contains the most) is at Yahoo! Groups. If you search for many combinations of political keywords at groups.yahoo.com, you will find either a group that I have set up or send messages to fairly regularly. [Note that I refrain much more from sending off-topic messages nowadays than I have done in the past, but still do for particularly important messages.] You can access these groups via the web (and read messages from or search the archives of many of them, including all I have set up, without the need to join the groups) or receive messages via email. The following are some of those I have set up and send my important messages to:

• PRsocialism – The forum of my Foundation for PR-based Socialism (for a form of socialism with a government elected by proportional representation by single transferable vote). You can subscribe to it or view the archives by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PRsocialism or subscribe by sending an email to PRsocialism-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
• ethical-capitalism – The forum of my Ethical Capitalism Network (for a more ethical capitalist society where rich people are forced to pay tax, perhaps leading to socialism). You can subscribe to it or view the archives by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ethical-capitalism or subscribe by sending an email to ethical-capitalism-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
• steve-wallis-socialist-blog – A blog of my most important messages. [Note that this is my only moderated forum, and that I have to approve all messages sent there including my own, which may cause a significant delay before they appear.] You can subscribe to it or view the archives by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/steve-wallis-socialist-blog or subscribe by sending an email to steve-wallis-socialist-blog-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
• manchesterism – A forum that was initially intended as the mailing list of an organisation I tried setting up called Manchester International Socialist Movement, now called the Manchester International Socialist Mailing List (although not restricted to people living in Manchester), It has mainly been a blog of my most important messages sent since the run-up to the war in Iraq in 2003, but also contains a lot of messages about Iran sent by another list member. • galaxiamusic – The forum of my band, probably to be called Galaxia, Red Day or Red Friday. [This forum is suggested for those who primarily want my music-oriented messages and just the most important of my others.] You can subscribe to it or view the archives by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/galaxiamusic or subscribe by sending an email to galaxiamusic-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

The interface to Google Groups is different; searching groups.google.com (or groups.google.co.uk) searches through all messages sent to any group as well as group descriptions (which must be much shorter than at Yahoo!) I post important messages to various such groups from time to time, including free.uk.politics.parties.socialist-party and alt.politics.socialism.trotsky, although I am no longer a Socialist Party member or Trotskyist. Such groups (separated by dots) are known as newsgroups, and you can only send messages to them via the web (or via a different interface such as those available at universities) and I have done so more rarely than those accessible by email. Newer Google groups are accessible by email, such as one I set up for fans of Sandi Thom (to which I have sent all my recent important political messages since she is a political singer and this was an easy way of ensuring that my messages can be found by searching Google Groups) – go to http://groups.google.com/group/sandi-thom.
