I spent my last five years at school in a town called Penarth, about five miles from Cardiff, and I am intending to play a leading role in setting up a Welsh Democratic Socialist Alliance (WDSA) based in Cardiff. I had hoped to support a candidate in the general election in that area, but will not be able to. However, I will play the leading role in establishing a “Campaign for Democracy in Wales” as part of the UK-wide democracy campaign, with some specific demands on powers for the Welsh Assembly as well as adopting demands for democracy in the UK as a whole. We will have to discuss the precise demands of the Welsh campaign, and we can then call for a demonstration outside the Welsh Assembly building in Cardiff. Perhaps everyone who supports the demands can sign declarations like the Declaration of Calton Hill, which over 1,000 people signed at a protest in Edinburgh organised by the Scottish Socialist Party on the 9 th of October (when members of the Scottish parliament from all other parties were sucking up to the Queen of England who was opening the new parliamentary building), calling for an independent Scottish republic built on the principles of liberty, equality, diversity and solidarity. However, independence is not widely supported in Wales, due to the lack of natural resources (oil and gas in the North Sea) and the fact that there is not so much poverty. Therefore, we shouldn’t call for independence for Wales. Hopefully, local groups can be set up in other areas of the UK based on the demands of the Campaign for Democracy in the UK, and then perhaps we can have a conference followed by a national demonstration.
I have set up a Campaign for Democracy in the UK website and a ‘campaign-for-democracy-in-the-uk’ discussion group (that you can receive emails from and/or browse or search its archive).
