Asylum & Immigration

I was heavily involved in the Lashley Family Must Stay Campaign, which was eventually successful in preventing the deportation of Owen Lashley, Lorraine Bartlett and their daughters Magdalen and Takita from the Moss Side area of Manchester where I lived to Barbados.

I also supported the campaign of a disabled woman living in Chorlton against her deportation, also on compassionate grounds. That campaign succeeded relatively quickly (in about six months).

New Labour refused an application of refugees from Darfur, who had heard a British Minister make a speech on the radio attacking the Sudanese government, to enter the country. There is no way that any of them were not genuine asylum seekers! However, their entry into Britain would radicalise people over here so they were not allowed in.

For a review of a TV programme reporting on physical abuse and racism towards asylum seekers and other immigrants, read my document Oppose private detention centres and prisons.
